Director’s Statement

about Insect

I had always wanted to work in film, but for various reasons the timing wasn’t right. I chose graphic design as a career path, but film was always my first love.
When I got laid off from a large IT company, I used part of my severance pay to fund this short.
I had a tiny budget, so I needed something small, but my imagination wanted something big!
The location came first – a tiny hidden room in an old textile factory. It was too cinematic to pass up and was the perfect “locked room” for some kind of showdown.
I came up with the concept of a young girl tormenting her abuser, and pushed that concept as far as I thought I could, and then managed to push it further.
Sometimes the space dictates the story it wants told.

And then on shoot-day, the space flooded and half the roof caved in.

Fortunately I had a great gaffer on-board who made sure everything was safe (once the waters receded).
We all nervously joked about the subject matter and the flooding, and hoped things wouldn’t get worse.
We were lucky, and even though we only had a half-day left to shoot, we still managed to make something cool.

It’s not exactly what I expected, and post took a couple of years (I did the cockroach segments myself) but I’m proud of what we accomplished, and I hope you enjoy it!

Valerie’s quiet night-in is disrupted when she realizes her younger sister Maya has taken an outfit from her closet. It’s not the first time, but it might be the last.
